Our latest community support project is our Baby Essentials collection drive in support of Door of Hope Children’s Mission in Johannesburg. This incredible organisation, founded in 1999, offers a loving home and support for abandoned babies.
We met Nadene Grabham, operations director at Door of Hope, when she joined one of our online Club meetings, and she addressed us about all the issues surrounding and contributing to abandoned babies in South Africa. She was an excellent speaker whose love and empathy for these babies came across in her every word. Nadene and her team are real life super heroes, taking care of little ones who need it most.

Door of Hope provides a “Babybox” where mothers can safely place their babies – and stay anonymous if they wish – and know that they will be cared for and given a safe and loving home. They also received babies from mothers who come to their doors, the police who have removed them where necessary, hospitals and other child protection organisations.
Approximately 300 children are abandoned every month but this figure only includes the survivors. The total number of abandonment is much higher.
To date, Door of Hope have take in 1730 babies of which 234 have come through the Babybox. The babies stay with them until they are adopted, reunited or placed into alternative permanent care. They currently have 68 babies in their care in 3 baby houses. They are also in the process of building a children’s village for kids who have no family but who are not adoptable.
At any one time, Door of Hope have between 66-72 children in their care, ranging from new born to about 3 years old, and they require assistance to meet their monthly needs. We are collecting essentials to support their efforts and would appreciate any contributions. Door of Hope have provided us with a list of monthly essentials which you will find below.
