The Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield supports 2 relief projects with donations of essential food and hygiene products in aid of people suffering loss of income and challenges related to the access of these basic items of sustenance.

To further our efforts to alleviate suffering of vulnerable people due to the Covid-19 disaster we are reaching out for support of our carefully identified recipients. While our Government is doing its best to provide aid to those in need, there are many who have not been able to benefit and are suffering real hunger and malnutrition. We are already striving to make a difference by supporting our beneficiaries but there is a far greater need, and for this we are reaching out for further assistance.

We as the The Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield are working together with our two partners:

• Wensaam Kinderbediening Centre
• Rutanang HIV Care Centre

Together we are responding to the effects of the Covid-19 hunger crisis and we are starting to see the results of our efforts as we continue to serve our community in need.

Wensaam Kinderbediening Centre

Wensaam provides meals to over 180 families per day around the Elandspoort and Danville areas in Pretoria. Cathy van Rensburg started this venture on her own over 15 years ago when she noticed a desperate need within this community. They rely on donations in order to continue preparing and providing these meals every day. The Centre receives some support from Maroela Media, but this is unfortunately not enough. Our Club has been assisting by collecting donations to support her Centre in continuing their efforts in feeding this community.

Rutanang HIV Care Centre

The Rutanang HIV Care Centre is a community-based organization run by volunteers. They are a registered Non-Profit Organisation with a portion of land which they have been given by their local government. They are situated in the North West Province, 40 minutes from Pretoria. On the property is a small office in the form of a container and a soup kitchen from which they feed about 110 children from poor families per day (the parents are usually unemployed). After the meal the volunteers supervise and help the children with their homework. The children are identified by the principal of the nearby Tlhopane Primary.

This new structure was completed just before Lockdown. It serves as a safe haven where children will be able to receive meals as well as supervised assistance with their school work. This structure was the result of a project of the Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield with support from local & international donations from our friends and family.

The community workers are volunteers and do not get any payment for their work. Community members assist with cooking meals and supervising the children after school. Albeit that the workers are also unemployed, the Project provides preference to these jobseekers as a result of the volunteer work at the Project.

Rutanang was a beneficiary of the National Lottery, however, these funds have been discontinued. The project currently relies on private donors for ingredients for the meals.

We are excited to announce the following milestones:

  1. Fundraising of +- R25 000 (donations as well as homemade face mask sales).
  2. International partner donation of R18 000.00
  3. Supporting Wensaam community with R18 000 divided into R3000 donations per week for a 6-week period.
We have prioritised the following urgent areas due to the overwhelming hunger outcry and to curb for the hygiene gaps as a result of unavailability of the necessary essentials in these areas and to also assist with food parcels for our prioritised recipients:
  4. Child-headed households.
  5. Chronic senior citizens and hospices.
  6. Vulnerable and starving foreign nationals without proper documentation.
  7. Orphanage homes
  8. People living with disabilities
  9. Homeless people staying in the outskirts
Within these priority areas, we would like to multiply our supply of the following items:
  10. Hygiene products, food parcels for 60 families in the Rutanang area as well as weekly assistance to Wensaam to continue the supply of meals for 180 families per day.
  11. Pamphlets and documents to guide and equip Rotarians and our strategic “RCC” partners to avoid violations of lockdown regulations.
  12. Allowing use of the Rotary District 9400 registration as an essential service provider
for the volunteers to move around the community legally.

What is the need?

We are in need of donations of +- R25 000 to enable us to further support the needs of additional households (average 7-10 people each) as scheduled below, but do not have the resources to help them:

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this request, we will happily set up a Zoom meeting to do so or invite you to our weekly Zoom Rotary meetings.

It is in this light of our international theme for 2019/2020 that we humbly ask for donations to cater for the urgent essential needs to save lives and diseases vulnerability as a result of malnutrition.

By and large, South Africa has handled the epidemic well, but there are pockets of suffering that Rotary can address. It’s not all doom and gloom, together we can take advantage of the power of international collaboration and do more.
