Debate and Mentorship Programme

Now virtual!

Our Debate and Mentorship Programme is tailored to honour and empower high school learners and expose them to different careers that will make them responsible and participative citizens in their communities and in society at large. Participation is open to learners 13 – 18 years old. Read on for more details or click here to apply.

As Frantz Fanon once asserted “Every generation must find its own mission and must either fulfil it or betray it”.

The current generation has great opportunities ahead of it and can offer solutions to the social, political and economic challenges that our communities and world are facing. A youth inclusive society and program such as this debate and mentorship programme can positively change the lives and enhance the confidence of many young people which will lead to a world of more young people who are educated, energetic and confident in their pursuit of changing the world and promoting world peace. Topics covered will fall within the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

It is a firm belief that young people in schools are leaders of tomorrow and if well exposed to purposeful careers, can carry positive attitudes in life and use their energy on the things that will bring a positive change in our world.

Young learners must start believing that they are indeed the leaders and peace builders of tomorrow. The world needs more speakers and doers and fewer people who choose to remain silent when things are going wrong and not do anything. The Debate and Mentorship Programme aims to inspire future Rotarians and produce confident and compassionate professionals in the years to come.

Baby Essentials Drive in Aid of Door of Hope

Our latest community support project is our Baby Essentials collection drive in support of Door of Hope Children’s Mission in Johannesburg. This incredible organisation, founded in 1999, offers a loving home and support for abandoned babies.

We met Nadene Grabham, operations director at Door of Hope, when she joined one of our online Club meetings, and she addressed us about all the issues surrounding and contributing to abandoned babies in South Africa. She was an excellent speaker whose love and empathy for these babies came across in her every word. Nadene and her team are real life super heroes, taking care of little ones who need it most.

Did you know? South Africa has one of the highest rates of infant abandonment in the world.

Door of Hope provides a “Babybox” where mothers can safely place their babies – and stay anonymous if they wish – and know that they will be cared for and given a safe and loving home. They also received babies from mothers who come to their doors, the police who have removed them where necessary, hospitals and other child protection organisations.

Approximately 300 children are abandoned every month but this figure only includes the survivors. The total number of abandonment is much higher.

To date, Door of Hope have take in 1730 babies of which 234 have come through the Babybox. The babies stay with them until they are adopted, reunited or placed into alternative permanent care. They currently have 68 babies in their care in 3 baby houses. They are also in the process of building a children’s village for kids who have no family but who are not adoptable.

At any one time, Door of Hope have between 66-72 children in their care, ranging from new born to about 3 years old, and they require assistance to meet their monthly needs. We are collecting essentials to support their efforts and would appreciate any contributions. Door of Hope have provided us with a list of monthly essentials which you will find below. Please note that they do not need any clothes, toys or blankets. Kindly contact us should you wish to make a contribution. You can make a cash donation using our secure payment method at the end of this post.

The Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield are pushing a 12-day MAIZE MEAL DRIVE to collect as much maize meal as possible to ease their burden. We will deliver the maize meal to them by Monday 31 August 2020.

Your support would be appreciated.

COVID-19 Food Relief Project Fundraiser

The Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield supports 2 relief projects with donations of essential food and hygiene products in aid of people suffering loss of income and challenges related to the access of these basic items of sustenance.

To further our efforts to alleviate suffering of vulnerable people due to the Covid-19 disaster we are reaching out for support of our carefully identified recipients. While our Government is doing its best to provide aid to those in need, there are many who have not been able to benefit and are suffering real hunger and malnutrition. We are already striving to make a difference by supporting our beneficiaries but there is a far greater need, and for this we are reaching out for further assistance.

We as the The Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield are working together with our two partners:

• Wensaam Kinderbediening Centre
• Rutanang HIV Care Centre

Together we are responding to the effects of the Covid-19 hunger crisis and we are starting to see the results of our efforts as we continue to serve our community in need.

Wensaam Kinderbediening Centre

Wensaam provides meals to over 180 families per day around the Elandspoort and Danville areas in Pretoria. Cathy van Rensburg started this venture on her own over 15 years ago when she noticed a desperate need within this community. They rely on donations in order to continue preparing and providing these meals every day. The Centre receives some support from Maroela Media, but this is unfortunately not enough. Our Club has been assisting by collecting donations to support her Centre in continuing their efforts in feeding this community.

Rutanang HIV Care Centre

The Rutanang HIV Care Centre is a community-based organization run by volunteers. They are a registered Non-Profit Organisation with a portion of land which they have been given by their local government. They are situated in the North West Province, 40 minutes from Pretoria. On the property is a small office in the form of a container and a soup kitchen from which they feed about 110 children from poor families per day (the parents are usually unemployed). After the meal the volunteers supervise and help the children with their homework. The children are identified by the principal of the nearby Tlhopane Primary.

This new structure was completed just before Lockdown. It serves as a safe haven where children will be able to receive meals as well as supervised assistance with their school work. This structure was the result of a project of the Rotary Club of Pretoria Hatfield with support from local & international donations from our friends and family.

The community workers are volunteers and do not get any payment for their work. Community members assist with cooking meals and supervising the children after school. Albeit that the workers are also unemployed, the Project provides preference to these jobseekers as a result of the volunteer work at the Project.

Rutanang was a beneficiary of the National Lottery, however, these funds have been discontinued. The project currently relies on private donors for ingredients for the meals.

We are excited to announce the following milestones:

  1. Fundraising of +- R25 000 (donations as well as homemade face mask sales).
  2. International partner donation of R18 000.00
  3. Supporting Wensaam community with R18 000 divided into R3000 donations per week for a 6-week period.
We have prioritised the following urgent areas due to the overwhelming hunger outcry and to curb for the hygiene gaps as a result of unavailability of the necessary essentials in these areas and to also assist with food parcels for our prioritised recipients:
  4. Child-headed households.
  5. Chronic senior citizens and hospices.
  6. Vulnerable and starving foreign nationals without proper documentation.
  7. Orphanage homes
  8. People living with disabilities
  9. Homeless people staying in the outskirts
Within these priority areas, we would like to multiply our supply of the following items:
  10. Hygiene products, food parcels for 60 families in the Rutanang area as well as weekly assistance to Wensaam to continue the supply of meals for 180 families per day.
  11. Pamphlets and documents to guide and equip Rotarians and our strategic “RCC” partners to avoid violations of lockdown regulations.
  12. Allowing use of the Rotary District 9400 registration as an essential service provider
for the volunteers to move around the community legally.

What is the need?

We are in need of donations of +- R25 000 to enable us to further support the needs of additional households (average 7-10 people each) as scheduled below, but do not have the resources to help them:

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this request, we will happily set up a Zoom meeting to do so or invite you to our weekly Zoom Rotary meetings.

It is in this light of our international theme for 2019/2020 that we humbly ask for donations to cater for the urgent essential needs to save lives and diseases vulnerability as a result of malnutrition.

By and large, South Africa has handled the epidemic well, but there are pockets of suffering that Rotary can address. It’s not all doom and gloom, together we can take advantage of the power of international collaboration and do more.

Lesotho School Uniform Drive

During our visit to Lesotho last year, we became aware of the dire need for school uniform shirts for the children in rural Lesotho. Most of their school shirts are old and thinning and some are so worn out that the collars are attached by a few threads.

We are raising funds to buy new shirts for the children at R100.00 each. If you would like to make a contribution please do so below using our secure Payfast gateway.

Tateni Care Centre Lego Sets

School children supported by the Tateni Community Care Centre were excited to receive Lego sets generously donated by the Lego Foundation.

The Tateni Community Care Centre supports up to 400 orphans and vulnerable children in 10 drop-in centres in Mamelodi. Lego, through the Rotary Club of Hatfield Pretoria, supplied an age-appropriate Lego set to each child from these drop-in centres. Some of the sets are valued at over R4000 each. Please see some of the pictures below.
